Annexure 1: Peoples Health Foundation Funding and Fundraising Strategies

Aim of PHF;
To promote the social welfare agenda for the foundation and the age-long progressive idea that good healthcare must be available to all regardless of wealth.
Promote accessible and qualitative healthcare to staffs and members of the party from grassroots
To operate health centres as a social enterprise (non-profit)  ensuring all proceeds are reinvested into the system.
Present PHF as an innovative healthcare outreach that will act as a legacy for the APC led government.

  1. How to Generate consistent Funding for PHF

  • Launching: This is the most veritable platform to introduce the initiative and solicit for partnership and funding.
  • Donors: These will come from individuals, institutions and foundations who share in the dream and want to be associated with it in the long term.
  • Staff/Workers Medical Allowances: Should be able to cover 20% of the annual budget of the service.
  • NGOs – We will reach out to known international NGOs who could support in logistics, materials, know-how and funding for example Action Health Incorporated, Family Health International, Ford Foundation, Red Cross, Red Crescent and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
  • Aspirants: All members seeking elective offices should be urged to donate. It is similar to the UK government’s system of a compulsory fee of £500 towards funding the NHS from all applicants for Permanent Residency in the country.

  • Party’s Contribution: Real commitment from the party is paramount and should be reflected on the amount voted to support the running of the project. This is one area the Board of Trustees of PHF should exert their weights in permeating the essence of PHF into the party’s fabric.

  • Fundraising: This is a sophisticated means of raising fund when managed properly and by professional fundraisers. We may likely involve a third party who specialises in fundraising to work with us on this arm.

  • 2.  Fundraising:
The following headings are suggested to carry the fundraising platforms:
    ·         Health Tips
    ·         Events
    ·         Corporate Partnership
    ·         Website.

    2.1. Health Tips:
The level of awareness in health related matters has significantly increased by the advent of social media. Some of the information through these platforms are not what medications to take when ill, it bothers on what we already know, natural things to indulge in or change of lifestyle to keep us fit. Surprisingly, we depend on others to tell us. This trend has created a lot of digital followers who are eagerly waiting for useful health tips to save them huge medical bills. They will gladly jump at any advice in this regards.
  • Peoples Health Foundation should have as one of its primary strategies a health informative arm that creates communications/tips on Cancer, Malaria Prevention, Hygiene, Keep Alive techniques, High Blood Pressure/Hypertension Control, Thyroid Health checks, Kidney infection etc. In truth, lack of medical advice has killed a lot of our people especially educated and well placed individuals.
  • These tips will be communicated through mobile phones and Health seminars. We will endeavour to sign on with many mobile telephone subscribers in the country for effectiveness.

How To Raise Fund For This Initiative:

        I.            Mobile Phones (GSM): NCC, said the number of active mobile phone lines in the country rose to 144 million in December 2017. What a leap! Like the ringtones, subscribers have the option of listening to current health tips at a fee. This procedure could be translated into major languages which will target the grassroots where quality medical services are in high demand.

      II.            Health Seminars:
Virtually all corporate organisations make provisions for medical allowances for their staffs and will equally encourage them to attend health seminars or in-house health workshops. PHF, for a fee, will catch on this including Keep Alive campaigns with pharmaceutical companies.

2.2.              Events:
It is achievable by using lifestyle events to create activities with people that matters most in politics, commerce, entertainments, sports, education etc to raise awareness of keep fit. Such events could be driven by a campaign theme ‘Walk for Life’, deployed on the following platforms:

NASS Walk for Life – It is unusual for these calibres of people to engage in any meaningful exercises because of their engagements and commitments. Getting them to walk for life will be a great source of social awareness in keeping fit. Such programme will attract a lot of publicity and goodwill.

  • Diaspora Walk for Life –
This appeal is targeted at APC foreign chapters where this concept originated with leadership from the United Kingdom. It includes financial, voluntary and expert assistance. We should also be mindful that some members are either practising health workers or have contacts with Nigerians in the medical fields hence considerable technical support is expected. However, it is expected that the head of APC Diaspora Chairmen will lead on this and make ‘Support for Life’ a brand and a money making fundraising tool for their Chapters.
  • People Walk for Life –
Generally our people have a sluggish attitude to exercise except for those on health remedies or weight conscious individuals. Therefore sports-related activities will be a formidable tool to help people keep fit and healthy while we use it to reinforce our charity drive. Exercise for Life is the time, the public can get active, have fun and raise cash for PHF. Activities in National Stadium Abuja/Lagos/Calabar.
  • Award for Life
This is by organising award ceremonies to recognise top ten exceptional people in rural healthcare, medical breakthroughs and volunteering. Emphasises essentially is on medical related matters and the progress of this initiative as well as the ‘Health Tips’ campaign. There will be a competition as part of the ‘Health Tips’ phone campaign with respective winners rewarded in these ceremonies. Other ideas could spin-off as the initiative progresses.

3.  Corporate Sponsorship :
·   Appeal will be made to multinationals, Banks and Oil companies to dedicate part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) towards this project. Hotels and Mega Supermarkets will also be approached to fundraise for us

4.  Online :
· Crowdfunding, Total Giving and GofundMe are some of the popular online fundraising sites which work with tight requirements including funder website, bank account and charity registration. Basically, we will engage a professional IT fundraiser because some fundraising sites do not include Nigeria in their coverage.

5.  Short Term Funding :
Loan – Seed money is needed earnestly to organise and put necessary structures in place. The owner(s) of the idea should be able to sponsor this bit and/or attract sponsors who can either loan or support the take-off financially. In truth, without seed capital, implementation would be delayed, and for this kind of initiative could easily be adopted by unauthorized persons. At this juncture, it is advisable to figure out the cost of taking off and the possible fund needed to organise the launch.
